What Is a Positive Parenting Program for Families With Young Children?
Updated: 3 hours ago
Positive parenting program teaches parents practical ways to build a warm bond with their child, encourage good behaviour and handle hard moments calmly. It is not about being a perfect parent. It gives you tools that work in real homes, on real days. Below, we explain how it works, who it helps and what to expect.
What Does a Positive Parenting Program Actually Teach?
Think of it as a structured course for parents. Triple P (Positive Parenting Program), which we offer, has more than 35 years of ongoing research behind it. It aims to prevent and treat behavioural and emotional problems in children. It also shares several principles with ABA theories, which fits well with our work at Roots. Depending on the course, parents learn how to:
• Build closer relationships. Small daily moments matter more than big gestures.
• Encourage positive behaviour. Notice what goes well, then help it happen again.
• Handle tricky behaviour. Prevent problems where possible and respond calmly when they appear.
• Cope with stress. Parents need looking after too.
Why Do Parents of Toddlers and Preschoolers Look for This Support?
Usually because something at home feels heavy. Raising a child with additional needs can be difficult, and no one warns you how tiring it gets. Our team supports young children and toddlers with autism and other additional needs, so we hear these worries often.
Everyday worry | How a parenting skills training program can help |
Meltdowns when routines change | You learn to prevent problems and respond with a steady voice |
Little time for real connection | You build a closer bond through everyday play and routines |
Feeling worn out or guilty | You gain ways to cope with stress and grow in confidence |
Different advice from every adult at home | The whole family, helpers included, can follow one clear plan |
Which Parenting Skills Training Program Fits My Child?
We offer parent training in English and Cantonese. The right choice depends on your child and the language your family prefers.
Program | Language | Who it suits |
Triple P | English | Parents of children and teenagers, to prevent and treat behavioural and emotional problems |
Stepping Stones Triple P | English | Parents of children with a developmental disability, with strategies for behaviour and family stress |
Happy Parenting (Heep Hong Society) | Cantonese | Parents raising children with special educational needs, using 20 essential techniques |

How Does Parent Training Link to Preschool Therapy in Hong Kong?
Parent training is one piece of our early support. Families exploring preschool therapy in Hong Kong often focus on the child alone. We look at the whole family. Our one-to-one ABA takes place at home, and we believe home and therapy work best together. What your therapist practises on Tuesday, you can keep going on Wednesday.
Our therapists are supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and our team brings more than 14 years of experience in special educational needs. We work with other professionals too, because one person rarely holds every answer.
Can Parent Training Help With School?
It can. We also offer school shadowing to support learning in the classroom. When parents, therapists and teachers share the same approach, your child gets a clearer message wherever they are.
Will a Parenting Program Judge Me?
No. Parents are usually their child's best advocates, and we treat you as an ally. The family is key to making therapy work. Our aim is simple: more knowledge, more skill and more confidence for you.
Does a Parenting Program Work Overnight?
Honestly, no. Change comes in small steps. In our therapy work, we record and analyse data, then adjust the plan as your child grows. Parenting works in a similar way. You may notice it first in ordinary moments: a calmer goodbye at the school gate, or a bedtime that ends without tears.
